Hey again, so I came across another article with potentially interesting implications for people with central sleep apnea and other types of apneas. The study was conducted by a group of scientists at the University of Illinois Department of Medicine. Rats (of course) were used to study the effects that cannabinoids, the chemicals found in marijuana, had on sleep. Delta-9-THC and oleamide were administered in specific doses. The results suggested that the concoction stabilized breathing, blocked serotonin-induced worsening of sleep-apnea, and generally suppressed episodes of sleep apnea in the study rats. The article goes on to comment about how medical marijuana use by patients helps improve their quality of sleep and decrease their perceived fatigue the following day. It doesn't mention if any of those patients had central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, or mixed, if they were cancer patients, or really what types of ailments they had, however. Finally, the article concluded by suggesting that further studies are needed to look at whether cannabis use has any affect on some of the issues associated with central sleep apnea and other forms of apnea like hypertension (high blood pressure), irregular heart beats (atrial fibrillation), or other forms of heart disease.
Studies that use medical marijuana often use a kind of marijuana that has a much lower percentage of THC than what can be found being grown in Canada, California, and other "mom and pop" operations. Although marijuana is illegal, I'm curious if any studies are being done with humans with central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, or other types of sleep disorders, because it's not like it would be dangerous for test subjects if the experiment had proper medical personnel, and it seems as though the benefits of such studies could have profound implications for a lot of people. I'm interested in hearing if anyone with central sleep apnea or other forms of sleep disorders, or anyone who "knows someone" for that matter, has noticed a difference in their sleep the next morning after an evening of marijuana use. I personally have a strong moral backing for medical marijuana use because of all the good things it can do for cancer patients as a substitute for expensive drugs needed post-chemotherapy. A special on the National Geographic channel about marijuana highlighted a lot of what I mentioned, so if it's ever on again and you have some time, give it a view.

And, you received your medical degree at which college? Your OPINION is just that a single OPINION, not based on anything other than your own experience - not from the facts obtained from ACTUAL MEDICAL DOCTORS that have made Medical Marijuana legal in no less than 15 states - enough said!
I have ashma and smoked weed for a long period of time I never had ashma attache and ive not had any in 3 yrs and it acts up all the time.plues since I havint had weed in awhile its harder to sleep and plus on weed I smoked less ciggaretts also.

You are correct in assuming apnea can be treated in many ways. Unfortunately, the toys that your link takes you to "may" do something for OSA but in NO WAY do anything but harm for CNA. Anyone can market these devices and they do no help at all, but waste of money. You have much to learn but for someone with this disorder, please do not take this disorder so lightly as "StopSnoringnowShop" apparently does. I mean Really?

My wife says taht after a couple of bedtime hits, I rarely snore and never make those gurgling choking sounds anymore. I wake up far more refreshed, and strangely enough, even my ED went away. It's hard for me to believe cannabis is illegal anywhere.

ReplyDeleteChalk me up as a believer. I more or less gave up smoking pot recreationally, but I've recently taken it up at night at my wife's bequest. She says I no longer snore (I had pretty bad sleep apnea) and now I note that I sleep a solid 6 hours - a huge improvement for me. I smoke a small bowl before I hit the rack and out I go. ReplyDeleteI have OSA and I used alcohol to sleep in afternoons 2hrs while at night I was sober and I made just 2-3 hrs additionaly with waking up every hour. Since I stopped using alcohol I slept only 3hrs at night witha lot of sweat and daytime I was way too tired. I was desperate. I started MMJ and my sleep was severely better - 6hrs of continuous sleep! Just make sure that you do not smoke too much during daytime, as it will trap your lungs and your oxygene level will be very low. Mine was 87. I am on bipap currently and making not more than 4 hrs at night. I stop MMJ due to OSA but I will be back on very soon! Use it but do not smoke more than 3 splifs a day. The best is eatingcombined with vaporizator. My suggestions... S
DeleteFunny, I have a cpap machine that I have yet to use because I feel the pressure almost hinders my breathing. I took a couple bong hits right before I fell asleep last nite and woke up with my alarm and didn't need to hit snooze. Ate breakfast at a normal hour and feel great. Then went looking for answers about cannabis and sleep apnea. I will further my own research, since its an obvious choice over that damned machine.
ReplyDeleteI suffer from sleep apnea. I've had it for about 5 years. I smoke cigs and weed for about 15 years. When smoking weed I found out it makes it worse. My body is completely relaxed and I stop breathing about 3-5 times a night. For people that don't have this disorder don't understand how scary this feeling is. I recently quit smoking weed for about 2 months and haven't had it since. I have nothing but good things to say about weed, but people that suffer from this disorder, my personal opinion should not some weed. Soon I hope to quit smoking cigs too. It is not worth going to sleep and worrying if your gonna wake up in the morning. I know it varies from person to person but in my case it makes it worse.
ReplyDeleteYou are right. I was recently diagnosed with OSA and I quit weed as well. My opinion is that weed is ok to put you asleep at night and can help you with your apnea and insomnia. Problem is that people are using it a lot during daytime what causes low oxygene level during daytime, while apnea lowers your oxygene level at night... bad combination, but keep at 3 joint at the most and try to use vaporizator in combination with edibles before sleep. this all is ok only if you use cpap, bipap, mouthpiece/jaw supporter or anything that opens your airways during nigh. otherwise, your lungs gonna be trapped at night due to apnea and your oxygene level will worsen. just keep it moderat if you can. I smoke weed 23+ years and i'm still trying to use it 3 at the most...

Been smoking a small amount of MJ every night (1-2 hits at most) for the last week as a little experiment and I have felt a drastic improvement. I tried it once before but I think I smoked too much and too long before bed, so that by the time I went to bed my body was coming down and it made my apnea even worse. I figured it didn't work for me, but then decided to try again. When I smoke it just before bed and only a couple hits I find I'm falling asleep just as the weed is starting to make my body tingle and open up my airways. It definetely works! I have what feels like ridiculous energy all day now, I can't get over it.
ReplyDeleteI guess its different for everyone, but if anyone has tried it and it didn't work try it again but take only a small amount and right before bed and see if it helps. Any of those commenting about how they smoke 3 joints a day and it doesn't work are obviously smoking for more than just their apnea - not a good test of its effectiveness.
I have OSA. I found out when a back/hip problem forced me to sleep on my back for 4 months (2yrs ago). Flexeril, poorly managed pain and Apnea in combo were literally killing me with serotonin toxicity and severe physical/mental impairment. May never fully recover....but trying.
ReplyDeleteAfter a lot of body work and pharmaceuticals I found my way to Medical Marijauna which conrols my muscle spasms and pain. I found that it helps my sleep mostly because I sleep on my stomach or side where I can get REM sleep. Also, a sleep study showed I had powerful slow wave sleep and Rem sleep of a much younger person while I was on it. (This was right after I discovered it so I had a lot of healing and thinking to do in my sleep :) Don't use my two study comparison as conclusive science.
FYI- I eat it mostly for the CBD- not smoked(airway irritant) for the THC. Once your receptors are bound up with the CBD like mine the THC doesn't have much phsycoactive effect anyway.
Everybody's brain chemistry is out of balance in their own unique ways. This works for me. Might explain some things for others.

Yes I have sleep apena when I first was dignosed my ahi 73 and because of it being so high they recommended oxygen...But my docoter said lets try cpap machine first and it was set 7 to 14. My docoter order an over night breathing test after I had machine and the results were 5..But also expereinced a drop in oxygen level 10 times in 3 minutes which she requested that I get the machin increase and redo test.Great docter.. I read about sleep apena and Marijauna so I tired some the secnd time she requested the cpap with overnight oxygen level test...The results ahi 0 no drop in oxygen levels..Might have been the increase in presure might have been the weed..or both. Will tell her and ask to run test one more time..this time no weed...not sure if she will do it but I am going to tell that I did take it before my sleep..

How do I join your blog? I have Central Sleep Apnea, but also have obstructive sleep apnea. The obstructive is from a lower jaw that is a bit small and further back, can only sleep on my back, wear a custom oral mandibular advancement appliance. I have central sleep apnea with baseline hypoxia. I utilize marijuana to make me less irritable due to lack of quality sleep. I have had many sleep studies (lab), and actually have another tomorrow to see how ASV treats condition. When on CPAP, it actually increases my apnea events and the tech was unable to titrate successfully. We will see, I don't think it will help.
ReplyDeleteI did a little study of my own. I live at 6300ft so I was curious if high altitude was causing my central apneas. Right before I went on vacation I benchmarked my oxygen saturation and picked a few days at sea level and then finally again when I returned home. The results where evident, I spent anywhere from 55-75% of my time sleeping with low desaturation of below 90%, and fluctuating as low as 80%. At sea level it barely registers any saturation levels below 90%.
I am a shallow breathier which is part of my issue. I think oxygen is the next level of treatment. If that is my solution then I think long term I'll need to move to sea level.
I am happy to share my data if anyone is interested, something that is lacking.
